History

Idemili is a local government to the North Western and South Side of Anambra State of Nigeria. It is made up of 19 towns with a combined population of over 1.2 million. It is the second most populous local government in Anambra State. The nineteen towns that make up Idemili are:

Abacha, Abatete, Akwa-Ukwu, Alor, Awka-Etiti, Eziowelle, Ideani, Nkpor, Nnokwa, Nnobi, Oba, Obosi, Ogidi, Ojoto, Oraukwu, Uke, Umudioka, Umunachi, and Umuoji.

Idemili is an all Igbo-speaking local government of Nigeria which is a melting pot of about 250 ethnic groups and about 97,000 identifiable communities. The people of Idemili are very hardworking, dynamic and vibrant with deep rooted pride in their ancestry deity – “Eke Idemili” or “Idemili Python” – which they never maliciously kill or consume.

Earlier in 2008, a few Idemili citizens who were present at a Nnobi meeting/gathering decided to write their names on a piece of paper so as to exchange their contact information. The list of names was started by Mr. Tochukwu Okaroh who wrote down his name on a plain sheet of paper and passed it on to Ms. Amaka Nwabia, Dr. Emeka Okpala, and so many others to sign. Some few months later, these individuals began to call other Ide Nnes and Ide Nnas  to discuss the need to form a Georgia Organization for Idemili Citizens. Two or three brainstorming teleconference meetings were held by Dr. Emeka Onuorah, Chief Joe Uzodinma, Ms. Amaka Nwabia, Dr. Emeka Okpala, Dr. Boniface Otor, Dr. Francis Onukwuli, Mrs. Nkoli Okoye, and Mr. Tochukwu Okaroh et al. Subsequent face-to-face meetings were held at Morrow Library (secured by Ms. Amaka Nwabia), Ms. Jack’s Club in Morrow (secured by Dr. Francis Onukwuli), and now at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Hapeville (secured by Dr. Emeka Okpala and Dr. Jacob Mgbemena). During the meetings which were held at Morrow Library and Ms. Jack’s Place, Ms. Amaka Nwabia and Dr. Francis Onukwuli served as the Interim Secretary and Chairman respectively.

Idemili United of Atlanta (IUA), Georgia; Incorporated was officially registered (as a domestic non-profit organization) with the Georgia Secretary of State by Dr. Francis Osita Onukwuli on May 1, 2009 with the help of Chief Joe Uzodinma and Ms. Amaka Nwabia. Prior to IUA registration, several individuals and small groups attempted to start an Idemili Organization but all failed because of either lack of interest in membership or simply the enormous amount of work, time, dedication, and sacrifice needed to bring the entire 19 towns of Idemili under one umbrella.

Nevertheless, history was made in Atlanta, Georgia, USA in May , 2009 when the people of Idemili local government in Anambra State of Nigeria who are resident in Georgia came together to forge unity and a sense of purpose for the benefit of Ide Nnes and Ide Nnas in Georgia and worldwide. The meeting was attended by over 30 concerned and enthusiastic Idemili citizens from different parts of Georgia in an atmosphere that signaled the dawn of a new era in collective will of Ndi Idemili to attain the utmost of their potentials and assist in the solution of the myriad of problems plaguing Ndi Idemili.

At the conclusion of the two and half hour meeting, the participants:

  • Spurred by the desire to catalyze the development of unity among Idemili citizens and a better Idemili local and state governments
